Profile

Paul Hoyningen-Huene was born in 1946, and studied physics and philosophy at the Universität München, the Imperial College of Science and Technology, and the Universität Zürich. He recieved his diploma in theoretical physics from the Universität München in 1971, and his PhD in theoretical physics from the  Universität Zürich in 1975. He was assistent to Professor A. Thelling in the institute for theoretical physics at the Universität Zürich from 1972-1976, and the assistant to Professor H. Lübbe in the philosophical seminar from 1975-1980. From 1976-1995 he taught philosophy, sociology, biology, history, environmental studies and psychology. From 1980-1998 he taught philosophy of science at the Universität Bern. From 1980-1982 he was a freelancer at "Fernsehen DRS" where he worked on the television program "Menschen, Technik, Wissenschaft" [People, Technology, Science]. From 1984-1985 he was a visiting scholar at the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy, MIT, where he worked with Thomas Kuhn. From 1987-1988 he was a senior visiting fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science, University of Pittsburgh, USA. From 1988-1996 he was a lecturer of philosophy of science at the ETH Zürich, and from 1989-1990 he was the senior assistant in the department of environmental science at the ETH Zürich. From 1990-1997 he was professor (C3) for the basic theory and history of the sciences, particularly the exact sciences, at the Universität Konstanz. He became professor (C4) and leader of the "Zentralen Einrichtung für Wissenschaftstheorie und Wissenschaftsethik" [central facility for the theory and ethics of science] at the Universität Hannover in 1997. He has been a guest lecturer or visiting professor in Switzerland (1980; 1987), Yugoslavia (1989; 1990), Denmark (1995; 2000) und Norway (1999).
